Bike Lane Stars - A Bike Lane To Honor Killed Bike Riders -

WELCOME
The deaths of two Brooklyn cyclists due to collisions with cars just hours apart on Friday, November 18th 2007 resulted in my first two *Bike Lane Strs, which were completed on November 1^st, 2007 in New York City. Inspired by the American Flag, I used the Stars and Stripes motif to illustrate the life of each cyclist at the time they were struck down. The total length (in feet) and the number of stars and stripes (one each year) represent the age of the dead cyclist’s. In addition, each Bike Lane Str* is painted at or near the exact location of each bike accident, thus memorializing their untimely death.The first Bike Lane *Str of 26 foot long is painted at the corner of Union Avenue and Ten Eyck Street in memory of C. Murphey and the second Bike Lane Str* of 41 foot long is painted at the corner of Utica Avenue and Fulton Street in memory of A. Taylor. These two and the many *Bike Lane Strs which will despairingly follow suit nationwide will serve: - as reminders of these victims and the human life that was needlessly cut short - to remind drivers and others to use caution around cyclists - to protect cyclists riding on the Bike Lane Strs* - and to afford the opportunity for more bike lanes which means more space for riders, shared roads and cleaner cities. My vision is that for each cycling victim lost, a *Bike Lane Str memorial will be created and through each of these, a worldwide network of bike lanes will emerge, throughout the US and abroad, creating a safe and healthy path for all riders which enhances the quality of their lives.
